APPLIES TO ALL WRITING
CONTESTS
All writing contests
must be standard manuscript form, as follows, unless
otherwise noted in the individual descriptions of the contests: white paper,
double-spaced, at least twelve point font. Poetry should be single-spaced Do
not put author’s name on manuscript, but do put title and page number in upper
right corner of each page. Attach cover sheet with author’s name,
address, phone number, and e-mail address in the upper left corner. Put word
count and specify the name of the contest in the upper right corner. Paper
clip manuscript and cover sheet . . . no staples. Be sure to enclose
entry fee. All submissions must be the original and unpublished work
of the author, unless otherwise noted. All contests are for OWL members
only, unless specified as "also open to public." Entry fees for OWL members
are $1 per entry. Only one entry per contest, unless noted otherwise.
Manuscripts will not be returned, but will be destroyed after judging.
See photo contest for photo return policy. Entries may be disqualified
for not following directions. All submissions must be the original
work of the author. The judges or reading committee shall not enter the
contest they judge or read.
Cliff Edom
1.
Must be postmarked no later than the Monday after the
February meeting, awarded at the May meeting.

Paperclip an index card to the back of
the 5”x7” or 8”x10” matted photo, with the photographer’s name, address, phone
number, and e-mail address on it. Name may not appear anywhere on photo.
4.
Entries are judged on composition, use
of available light, and appropriateness to the theme. The theme for 2007 is
“Places in the Ozarks.” The theme rotates each year. (’08 – Things in the
Ozarks; ’09 – People in the Ozarks; ’10 – Places in the Ozarks.).
5.
Entries will not be returned unless
sufficient postage and envelopes are attached. Entries may also be picked up at
the May meeting. If not, will be destroyed. May enter more than once, with
addt’l fee.
6.
A plaque will be awarded at the
May OWL meeting to the photographer fulfilling the high standards established by
the philosophies and teachings of Cliff Odom, founder of the Photo-Journalism
Department of the Univ. of Missouri-Columbia.
Cliff Edom
founded the Photo-Journalism Department at the University of Missouri-Columbia
in 1943. He created the Pictures of the Year Contest in 1944 and the
Missouri Photo Workshop in 1949. Cliff and his wife, Vi, charter
members of OWL, published several books including, Twice Told
Tales, An Ozarks Photo Album and Forty Years of Missouri Photo Workshops.
Cliff Edom died in 1991.
Dan Saults
1. Must be postmarked
no later than the Monday after the May meeting, awarded at the August meeting.

No member may win the award more than twice in five consecutive years.
Unpublished entries must have been written within 12 months preceding entry.
Published works must have been published within 12 months preceding entry.
Submit published work in usual manuscript form, or in tear sheet form with
author's name removed or blacked out (state name of publication and date
published.
Specific works may be entered only once.
Maximum length is 5,000 words.
Entries may be in any form―fiction,
non-fiction, essay, poem, etc.
The Dan Saults Plaque will be presented during the August meeting.
Dan
Saults enjoyed a long and
distinguished career as a dedicatedconservationist and outdoor journalist. He
graduated from the prestigious journalism school at the University of Missouri.
After distinguished service in WW II, he assumed editorship of Missouri
Conservationist magazine, where he became chief of the Office of Information.
Later, he became the department’s deputy director. In 1964, he joined the U.S.
Bureau of Land Management as assistant to the director and chief of information
in Washington, D.C. A year later he became chief of information for the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service (then called the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and
Wildlife). After his retirement in 1973, he and his wife Helen moved to Branson,
where he wrote a weekly column, “Saulty Observations,” for the Branson
Beacon and the Springfield News Leader, as well as articles for
Ozarks Mountaineer and Missouri Life Magazine. After his death in September of 1985, the Dan Saults
Writing Award was established by the Ozark Writers League to honor his memory. In 1990 he was inducted into the Conservation Hall of Fame.
Gene Andereck
Must be

November meeting.

Entries must be unpublished
works of fiction.
Any genre, up to 5,000 words.
No graphic violence or sex.
Enter as often as you like, with
entry fee for each.
Money prizes and certificates awarded for first, second, and
third place. Winners announced at February meeting.
ANTHOLOGY
Short stories and essays no longer than
3,000 words; poems, no longer than a single page; photos, at least 8x10, color
preferred, black and white if of exceptional quality and subject matter.
All entries must relate in some way to the Ozarks.
Short stories should either be set in the Ozarks, or be Ozarks related by tone
and voice. These can be contemporary or historical. Follow the same
guidelines for poetry. Photos must have Ozark subject matter, and should have
good contrast so as to work well on a possible book cover (300 pixels).
Please identify location of photograph subject. Previously published
works are accepted, just let us know where and when.
Cover sheet should have 50 word bio, and
number of years you have been a member of OWL.
No fee for this contest.

By
submitting your work to this contest, you are agreeing, that if you are

Echoes of the Ozarks
OWL's first anthology was a great success. We've sold over nearly 400
copies since last November. Our second anthology, Echoes of the Ozarks
Volume II, is now available. We will have copies of both anthologies at all meetings, or
you can buy from our

We
are also taking submissions now for our third anthology, which will come out
in the fall of 2007. The guidelines are above. And remember,
although publication in this anthology is open to OWL members only, our
membership fee is very reasonable.

SHORT STORY CONTEST
Regina Williams, editor of Storyteller Magazine,
has agreed to publish the first place winner in her magazine. Send only your best
work. This is an opportunity to not only have your work published, but be a nominee
for the prestigious Push Cart Prize. You may, of course, decline this publication.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
*Fiction, any genre, no more than 1,500 words.
*No graphic violence or sex.
*Double space, at least 12 point font, white
paper only.
*Do not put author's name on manuscript, but do
put title and page # in upper right corner of each page.
*Attach cover sheet with author's name,
address, phone, and e-mail address, plus 30 word bio. Put word count and
specify it's for the Short Story Contest.

following is a list of regular OWL contests...the deadlines are always the

Annual Gene Andereck
Memorial Writing Contest-- OWL Members only.
(this was formerly the OWL Writing contest)
Entries must be fiction, no longer than 5,000
words, any genre', and unpublished at time of submission.
Standard manuscript form (typed, double-spaced, one-inch margins).
Author's name and address should appear on the title page only.
Entry fee is $1. Enter as many manuscripts as you
like, with a dollar entry fee for each.
Contest announced in August. Entries

The President will appoint a reading committee. Winners will be announced at
the February meeting. In addition to certificates, and thanks to the
very generous donation of Gene's son, Kim Andereck, the winners will be presented cash

Dan Saults Memorial Award

Guidelines:
The annual DAN SAULTS Contest is for OWL members only.
Entries accepted at the May meeting or
postmarked the Monday immediately following the May meeting to Jeanie Horn,

Members may submit their own work or that of another member with the author's
knowledge and consent.
No member may win the award more than twice in five consecutive years.
No member of the current Dan Saults reading committee may enter.
All submissions must be the original work of the author.
Topics need to represent the ideals and character of Saults, but may be in any form (fiction,
non-fiction, essay, poem, etc.) scroll down for info on Dan
Saults.
