OWL Contests:

Cliff Edom Photography Contest

1.       Must be postmarked no later than the Monday after the February meeting, awarded at the May meeting. 

2. Open to OWL members only, no fee required.

3. Paperclip an index card to the back of the 5”x7” or 8”x10” matted photo, with the photographer’s name, address, phone number, and e-mail address on it.  Name may not appear anywhere on photo.

4. Entries are judged on composition, use of available light, and appropriateness to the theme.  The theme for 2007 is “Places in the Ozarks.”  The theme rotates each year.  (’08 – Things in the Ozarks; ’09 – People in the Ozarks; ’10 – Places in the Ozarks.).

5. Entries will not be returned unless sufficient postage and envelopes are attached.  Entries may also be picked up at the May meeting. If not, will be destroyed. May enter more than once, up to five entries.

6. A plaque or trophy will be awarded at the May OWL meeting to the  photographer fulfilling the high standards established by the philosophies and teachings of Cliff Odom, founder of the Photo-Journalism Department of the Univ. of Missouri-Columbia. (the winning entry may never be entered in this contest again.)

Cliff Edom founded the Photo-Journalism Department at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1943.  He created the Pictures of the Year Contest in 1944 and the Missouri Photo Workshop in 1949.   Cliff and his wife, Vi, charter members of OWL, published several books including, Twice Told Tales, An Ozarks Photo Album and Forty Years of Missouri Photo Workshops.   Cliff Edom died in 1991.

  Dan Saults Contest

 

Must be postmarked no later than the Monday after the May meeting, awarded at the August meeting. There is no fee.

   Open to members only. First place winner may not enter the Dan Saults the following year.

   Unpublished entries must have been written within 12 months preceding entry. Published works must have been published within 12 months preceding entry.

   Submit published work in usual manuscript form, or in tear sheet form with author's name removed or blacked out (state name of publication and date published.)

          Maximum length is 5,000 words. One entry only.

    Entries may be in any form―fiction, non-fiction, essay, poem.

            The Dan Saults Award will be presented during the August meeting.

  Hoot & Holler Contest

Come on OWL members . . . do a little Hootin' and Hollerin' for the Ozarks Writers League!!!  Send us your essay, poem, or short story and let us know what OWL means to you.  Let us know how OWL has helped you or perhaps made a difference in your life in 2,500 words or less.

Title, word count, name, address, phone number & e-mail on cover page. 

There is no fee .

Must be postmarked by the Monday following the August meeting, and the winner will be announced at the November meeting.  There will be one winner, who will receive a certificate and cash prize of $50.

Gene Andereck Short Story Contest Guidelines  

        Must be postmarked no later than the Monday after the November meeting awarded at the Feb.   meeting.

        Entries must be unpublished works of fiction.

        Any genre, up to 5,000 wordsNo graphic violence or sex.

        One entry only. OWL members only, no fee. First place winner may not enter this contest the    following year.

        Standard manuscript form (typed, double-spaced, one-inch margins). 

        Author's name and address should appear on the title page only.

         

The President will appoint a reading committee.  Winners will be announced at the February meeting.  In addition to certificates, and thanks to the very generous donation of Gene's son, Kim Andereck, the winners will be presented cash awards of $100, $50, and $35 for first, second, and third place.

Online SHORT STORY CONTEST (ALSO OPEN TO NON-MEMBERS)

        Fiction, any genre, no more than 1,500 words.

     No graphic violence or sex.

        On cover sheet, include 30 word bio. 

        Entry fee for non-members: $5.  May submit up to 3 entries, with entry fee for each.  NO FEE FOR PAID OWL MEMBERS. 

        Money prizes for first three places. ($100; $50; $25.) Three Honorable Mentions will also be awarded.  Each winner will receive a certificate, plus their name listed on web page and newsletter.  First three place winners will have the opportunity to have their stories posted on the OWL website. They may refuse publication.

        Deadline is July 30.  Winners will be notified by the August meeting.
