Note to Members. We have changed the contest format drastically this year. We are now doing more contests with most having one deadline, and cash prizes for each.We'll also be holding a "HillBilly Formal" awards banquet. We expect you to wear your fanciest top or jacket with your most comfortable jeans and sneakers. The banquet will be held the Friday night before out regular November meeting. Keep checking this site for more information. This is going to be a fun year!

Like our friends here, you can dance your way into some fun by entering OWL contests. Winners will be honored at our Hillbilly Formal Banquet in November. Remember, you have to be a member to enter.

GENERAL RULES APPLY TO ALL CONTESTS
1. All writing contests must be standard manuscript form: white paper, double-spaced, at least 12 point font. Poetry should be single-spaced. Do not put author's name on manuscript, but do put title and page number in upper right corner of each page. Attach cover sheet with author's name, address, phone number, and e-mail address in the upper left corner. Put word count and specify the name of the contest in the upper right corner of the cover sheet. Paper clip manuscript and cover sheet, no staples. Must be mailed flat in no smaller than an 81/2 x 11 envelope.
2. All submissions must be the original unpublished work of the author, unless otherwise noted. All contests are for OWL members only. Only one entry per contest, unless noted otherwise. All submissions are final. No subsequent/revised submissions accepted.
3. No gratuitous or graphic violence or sex.
4. Manuscripts will not be returned, but will be destroyed after judging. See photo contest rules for photo return policy.
5. Qualified judges will conduct blind judging of all contests. Judges/reading committees shall not enter the contests they judge.
6. First Place winning entries may never be entered in any OWL contest again. Entries may be disqualified for not following directions.

Your $10.00 fee entitles you to enter as many contests as you wish, but only one entry per contest. No manuscript may be entered in more than one contest. Manuscripts will be destroyed. Sponsors may not enter their contest, but may enter all others. First place winning entries may never be entered in any OWL contest again.

Cliff Edom Photography Contest
1. Must be postmarked no later than Monday after the Feb. meeting
2. Paperclip an index card to the back of the 5x7 or 8x10 matted photo, with the photographer's name, address, phone number, and e-mail address on it. Name may not appear anywhere on the photo .
3. Entries are judged on composition, use of available light, and appropriateness to the scene. The scene rotates each year. (2010 places in the Ozarks: 2011 Things in the Ozarks: 2012 People in the Ozarks).
4. Entries will not be returned unless sufficient postage and envelopes are attached. Entries may also be picked up at the May meeting. If not, they will be destroyed. May enter up to five entries.
5. A Plaque or trophy will be awarded at the May OWL meeting to the photographer fulfilling the high standards established by the philosophies and teachings of Cliff Edom, founder of the Photo-journalism Department of the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Cliff Edom founded the Photo-Journalism Department at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1943. He created the Pictures of the Year Contest in 1944 and the Missouri Photo Workshop in 1949. Cliff and his wife, Vi, charter members of OWL, published several books including, Twice Told Tales, An Ozarks Photo Album and Forty Years of Missouri Photo Workshops. Cliff Edom died in 1991.
ECHOES OF THE OZARKS ANTHOLOGY CONTEST
1. Must be postmarked no later than September 1st. All winners will be printed in the anthology.
2. Entries must be short stories or essays, 3,000 words maximum, sent electronically to louturn@aol.com. Please put your work in the body of an e-mail—not as an attachment, if at all possible. (Not responsible for lost e-mails if subject line does not say "Echoes Submission"). Poems, no longer than a single page, should be single-spaced, 12 point, New Times Roman. Poetry can be sent in hard copy to preserve your preferred formatting. One entry only. Winners of OWL contests for the prior twelve months are encouraged to enter those winning entries.
3. All entries must relate in some way to the Ozarks . Short stories and essays should either be set in the Ozarks, or be Ozarks-related by tone and voice. These can be contemporary or historical. Follow the same guidelines for poetry. Previously published works will be accepted, just let us know where and when it was first published.
4. Cover sheet must have name, address, telephone, e-mail address, and number of years you have been a member of OWL and please include number of words with title. Include a fifty (50) word bio below. Put this information in the body of an e-mail with your entry when sending electronically, NOT as an attachment. If your work is selected and you haven't sent a bio, no bio will be included. All submissions are final.
5. No graphic violence or sex will be considered for this publication.
6. By submitting your work to this contest, you are allowing it to be edited and considered for publication. If your work is chosen, you understand and agree with the conditions for publication. Echoes of the Ozarks will require one time rights only. The work can have been published elsewhere, and can be published again after Echoes of the Ozarks has been available for sale for a 30 day period. No further contract will be required. Contributors may make a one-time purchase at a discounted price. Since this is a fundraiser for OWL, and due to the number of submissions being considered, no free copies will be distributed.
