Susan Swartwout and Angie Fox to Speak to OWL!
SUSAN SWARTWOUT
Susan Swartwout teaches creative writing and publishing at Southeast Missouri State University and is the Publisher of Southeast Missouri State University Press which produces books and Big Muddy: Journal of the Mississippi River Valley, an interdisciplinary magazine. Her two collections of poetry are entitled Freaks and Uncommon Ground. She co-edited Real Things: Anthology of Popular Culture in American Poetry, Hurricane Blues: Poems about Katrina and Rita, Balancing on a Bootheel, and A Student’s Guide to Getting Published. Her poems and short stories are published in literary journals such as Nebraska Revieew, The Laurel Review, River Styx, Negative Capability, Mississippi Review, and Spoon River Poetry Review, among others. She is a recipient of the Rona Jaffe Writers’ Foundation Award, the Dillinger Good Award, and St. Louis Poetry Center’s Hanks Award.
Perhaps the only thing rivaling Swartwout’s technical skill is her passion for writing. Her ability to critique honestly and constructively, and her sincere interest in her students’ work have energized the college’s Department of English. There is a talented, vibrant, and expanding community of creative writers at Southeast now, and Swartwout is its champion.
Dr. Swartwout will share her writing expertise as both a teacher and an author.
She'll be talking about "getting in the
door" in literary magazines and small presses in today's economic climate--the
research, the query, the cover letter.

ANGIE FOX
Angie Fox is the New York Times bestselling author of the Accidental Demon Slayer series. She claims that researching her books can be just as much fun as writing them. In the name of fact-finding, Angie has ridden with Harley biker gangs, explored the tunnels underneath Hoover Dam and found an interesting recipe for Mamma Coalpot’s Souothern Skunk Surprise (she’s still trying to get her courage up to try it).
Angie earned a Journalism degree from the University of Missouri. She worked in television news and then in advertising before beginning her career as an author. Visit Angie at www.angiefox.com.
Angie will talk to the OWL members about Lining up the Bones: Crafting Your Novel from Beginning to End.

New York Agent Paul Fedorko and Daniela Rapp, editor at St. Martins Press, visit Ozarks Writers League. Noted author, Shirley McCann rounds out the day.

Having built his career on both the
publishing and literary agency sides of the book business, Paul Fedorko
brings his expertise in working directly with established authors, new writers,
and personalities on both fiction and non-fiction projects. Prior to joining
Bienstock, Paul had been a literary agent at Trident Media Group for more than
five years, ran The Paul Fedorko Agency, and spent more than twenty years as a
publishing and marketing executive at Dell/Delacorte, Bantam, Simon & Schuster,
and William Morrow. He brings his wide array of publishing experience and unique
skills to his clients. He’s worked with many brand name as well as first-time
authors. “Having worked on both sides of the book business, my passion is
helping authors develop their projects and partnering them with the right
editor and publisher.”
Born and raised in New Jersey, Paul graduated from St.
Peter’s College, currently resides in Manhattan and considers himself a native
New Yorker.

Daniela Rapp has been an editor at St. Martin's Press since 2003. Currently acquisitions editor, her list of projects have a wide range. She's actively looking for mysteries (historical and contemporary), high-concept women's fiction, serious narrative nonfiction titles, as well as books about pets, animals, nature, American history, language and humor, and travel. She is not interested in representing historical fiction, chick lit, romance, and very few prescriptive books. She is especially interested in multi-cultural projects and Native American topics.

Short story writer Shirley
McCann joins us from Springfield, MO. A prolific
writer of short stories, with one YA book in print and a suspense novel being
marketed, she's a powerhouse writer. She's had over a dozen short stories
published in Woman's World Magazine, and she'll be sharing that expertise at the
OWL May meeting. She’ll be talking about “How to Write a Short Story and How to
find Short Story Markets.” She maintains a website at www.shirleymccan.com and a
blog at www.cleverchronicles.blogspot.com.
