By OWL Member, Jean
Lafferty
Will
Musgrave , an orphan boy of
thirteen, has run away
from an
abusive situation where he has been kept
prisoner for
forced labor. Russell Donovan has lost his
wife and
infant child and has turned to the bottle for
comfort.
When Russell finds that Will has been living in his barn
loft, he is
drawn back, however reluctantly, into the world of life,
hope, and
love. Just when Russell begins to accept the boy and
they settle
into a comfortable routine of family life, Caleb Sikes,
Will’s
former captor, sets out to burn Russell’s home, kill his
cattle, and
cause mayhem at every opportunity in order to get
Will back.
The lengths Sikes is prepared to go raises the suspicion
in Russell’s
mind that there is more than just free labor behind
Sikes’
brutal attacks. Eventually, Russell does learn that Will has a
relative,
and he is forced to battle not only Caleb Sikes, but Will’s
Aunt Tilly,
in order to keep his new-found family in tact.
Review Gene
Lafferty's book and see your review posted on
the OWL Book Review
page coming August 1, 2007.
Gene Lafferty
was born in Springfield, Missouri, a century
too late to experience
the West in its heyday. A deep love for all
things western
developed, however, in the pages of books by
Zane Gray, Luke Short,
and of course Louis L’Amour. Today,
Lafferty resides in
northern Arkansas and uses every opportunity
to travel west and
write stories about it.
