When you put knives in a drawer, the blades jostle each other, resulting in dings and nicks in the blade of the knives. This dulls it and reduces its effectiveness when you start cutting and slicing. One of the ways to properly store a kitchen knife is by putting them in a knife block that has horizontal slits. Putting them in one prevents your knives from hitting and jostling against each other.

Leaving Knives in the Dishwasher

Many people make the mistake of washing their knives with the other utensils and plates in the dishwasher. The effects of doing so are like storing knives in the drawer, the knives jostle against each other and other items in the washer, this leads to bends and nicks on the blade. The other problem with this is the chemicals in detergents may cause corrosion and discolouration.

The best way to clean kitchen knives is to do so promptly in the sink using your hands and without the need for harsh chemicals. Dry them and store them properly in a knife block after washing.

Glass cutting boards may seem pretty and a lot of people buy them because they look good. However, when you cut and slice on these regularly, it quickly dulls the edge of your knives, because glass is harder than the blade. Cutting on this type of board flattens and bends the blade, reducing its effectiveness.
